  • Chinese rider Alex Hua Tian announces first choice horse at Paris Olympics #rwanda #RwOT

Alex Hua Tian, 34, is making the final preparations for his fourth Olympic Games at Pinfold Stables near Manchester Airport. Chocs, Chicko, and Stig have all been qualified for the Games, and he finally made the hard decision to choose one as his first choice.

“I’m really, really excited to say that Chocs is my first choice,” said the Hangzhou Asian Games champion. “He’s a horse that I’ve been partners with for seven years now since 2017. He is supremely talented. He’s probably the best horse I’ve ever sat on in my life. And if we can keep him fit and healthy between now and Paris, I’m really, really excited. He’s the type of horse that, as a rider, you dream to have at Olympic Games.”

Hua was the youngest eventing rider to compete at the Olympics when he competed at the Beijing Games in 2008. He missed the London Games but made appearances at both the Rio and Tokyo Games.

“It’s a big difference actually because this is my first Olympic Games that is in the Continent of Europe,” said Hua. “I’m based in Europe, I compete in Europe. And so normally, before the Olympics, we are quite used to quarantining the horses, all of the paperwork and logistics and health requirements, flying the horses, all of the stress and distraction that brings. And this time it’s quite different. We’re just driving the horses across to Paris, which is something we do a lot all the time.”

“I think this is in some ways much easier, the logistics is less of a distraction, and we can really concentrate on the preparation and the performance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hua felt that it’s his first Olympics where his sport is really feeling at home. “The French are really strong, very passionate equestrians and also very, very passionate about eventing.”

“I think the venue will be iconic for being surrounded by all of the history of Versailles. And I think the audience will be very, very educated and very passionate about equestrians. So that’s something I’m really looking forward to too,” he added.

Hua admitted that as a soon-to-be four-time Olympian, he started to feel that he’d like to be quite competitive. “But then you have to manage your own expectations. You’re dealing with horses, so you can’t have everything your own way most of the time.”

  • 'Happy Family Rwanda Organization' launches study on GBV and Teenage Pregnancies #rwanda #RwOT

This is through the UNESCO Program “Our Right Our Lives Our Future', aimed at supporting the country to deliver comprehensive sexuality education for adolescents and young people in Sub-Saharan Africa

The program helps young people to access information about Sexual reproductive health, combat and prevent unwanted pregnancies, Gender-Based violence (GBV) and HIV/AIDS.

The study began on June 14th , 2024, and will end in August. It is being conducted in secondary schools and institutions involved in combating and preventing Gender-Based Violence(GBV) and teenage pregnancies.

“We should learn to be satisfied with what we have as this will help us to avoid temptations. It will also help us to continue our education without interruption. because when someone becomes a parent at a young age they are not prepared for it, this leads to the failure and sometimes dropping out of the school' she said.

  • Four killed and dozens injured as 12 train coaches derailed in India #rwanda #RwOT

Four people were killed when 12 train coaches were derailed in Uttar Pradesh, India on Thursday. Dozens of others were injured in the accident, and emergency services remain at the scene.

Local officials in Gonda district are overseeing relief operations with the assistance of villagers from the area, and several ambulances are on site, Indian Railways has said.

In footage published online, survivors could be seen squatting beside derailed train coaches as rescue operations were underway. The train was traveling from the town of Dibrugarh in the northeastern state of Assam to Chandigarh, Punjab.

Officials have been instructed to take the injured to the hospital as a 'top priority' and 'provide them proper treatment,' Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, posted on X (formerly Twitter). A high-level inquiry has been ordered following the incident, The Hindu newspaper reported.

All trains that were scheduled to travel via the same route have either been diverted or canceled altogether, reports said. Meanwhile, the Railway Ministry has announced that compensation will be provided for those who suffered in the incident, as well as for the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Indian opposition was quick to criticize the government in the wake of the tragedy. Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Indian National Congress, the key opposition party, described the accident as 'yet another instance of how the government has systematically jeopardized rail safety.' He urged the federal government to install the 'Kavach anti-collision system' on all routes to prevent further accidents.

The Kavach is a cab-signaling train control system with anti-collision features developed in India. Last month, the Railways Ministry revealed plans to implement the system on 44,000km of track within the next five years. However, the opposition has been urging the federal government to fast-track its implementation in light of several high-profile train accidents over the past few years.

Last month, nine people died and 41 were injured when the Kanchanjunga Express traveling from Agartala in Tripura to Sealdah in West Bengal was rear-ended by a goods train. Senior officials cited 'human error' as the likely cause of the accident.

Another major train collision occurred in Odisha state last year when almost 300 people were killed and more than 1,200 injured in the country's worst rail disaster in decades.

The world's most populous nation relies heavily on rail transportation, with more than 12 million people traveling on 14,000 trains each day.

  • Russia accuses Ukraine of using chemical weapons #rwanda #RwOT

Ukrainian forces are deploying chemical weapons against Russian troops on the battlefield, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has said. He added that Moscow has amassed enough evidence to prove that Kiev is working with Washington to produce components for biological weapons.

In a commentary for the Russian Zvezda TV channel on Thursday, Ryabkov claimed that Kiev has been engaged in illegal activities related to chemical and biological warfare. However, he noted that it is necessary 'to separate the issue of the use of chemical warfare agents, which we, of course register in the actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine' from that of biological weapons research.

The diplomat said that Russia was informing relevant international agencies about both issues and sends reports to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Regarding the violations of the Biological Weapons Convention, Ryabkov stated that during the nearly two-and-a-half-year conflict the Russian military had collected 'comprehensive, extensive material showing the full depth of cooperation between Washington and Kiev in this area.'

He described the alleged violations as 'unacceptable' and said they were condemned not only by Russia, but also by many members of the international community. At the same time, Ryabkov said Moscow had not been able to get a clear answer about its concerns from Ukraine and its Western backers.

The OPCW defines a chemical weapon as 'a chemical used to cause intentional death or harm through its toxic properties,' which can be dispersed via bombs, artillery shells, or other delivery devices.

Ryabkov's comments come after the Russian Defense Ministry announced earlier this month it had discovered a Ukrainian chemical laboratory, located not far from the Donbass town of Avdeevka captured by Russian troops, that was apparently used to produce highly toxic hydrogen cyanide. Moscow also claimed, citing a Ukrainian POW, that Kiev used chemical agents to produce kamikaze drones.

Russia has also been sounding the alarm for months about what it says is a vast network of biological laboratories in Ukraine, supported by the US and its NATO allies. The US has acknowledged that there are indeed a number of biolabs on Ukrainian soil, but insists that they are entirely legal and are not being used to produce biological weapons.
