During a recent visit, IGIHE explored the restaurant, its ambience, and the philosophy behind its Afro-Asian fusion cuisine, speaking with Kōzo Kigali’s leadership to understand what makes the experience unique.

Kōzo Kigali officially opened its doors in November 2023, marking the brand’s expansion from West Africa to East Africa. Originally founded in Ghana, the restaurant is the vision of a Ghanaian owner who sought to create a dining experience that leaves a lasting impression.

According to Dinesh Parerao, Director of Operations at Kōzo Kigali, the success of the original restaurant in Ghana sparked the desire to look beyond borders.

'When we realised that this success should not be limited to Ghana, we began exploring different African markets,' Parerao told IGIHE. 'When we visited Rwanda, we felt it was the right choice, as it is one of the emerging hospitality markets.'

That sense of intention is reflected in both the food and the overall experience. Kōzo Kigali positions itself as an affordable fine-dining restaurant, recently introducing a lunch set menu designed to fit into Kigali’s fast-paced lifestyle. Priced between 20,000 and 35,000 Rwandan francs, the menu offers a complete dining experience, from welcome drinks to starters, a main course, dessert, and even a digestive at the end of the meal.

'People experience it, and I can say that it is one of the best affordable meals that we can provide in town,” Parerao added.

Kōzo’s identity is defined by its farm-to-table philosophy. The restaurant works closely with local farmers to ensure consistent quality and freshness, while also supporting Rwanda’s agricultural community. For the team, success is measured not only in numbers but in the way guests feel welcomed and cared for.

'One of our proudest moments is simply getting customers through the door and making them feel at home,' Parerao said. 'We are also proud to host global brands and personalities who choose Kōzo to celebrate their special moments.'

Over time, Kōzo Kigali has become a hub for international events and high-profile gatherings. From hosting American comedian Dave Chappelle’s pop-up show in May 2024 to events linked to the Basketball Africa League (BAL), the NBA, and Giants of Africa, the restaurant has positioned itself as a bridge between Kigali and the global cultural scene.

Behind the menu is Group Executive Chef Sakorn Somboon, whose culinary philosophy blends deep historical context with creativity and local adaptation. Speaking to IGIHE, Somboon described Indian and Chinese cuisines as the foundations of global culinary art, noting their thousands of years of history compared to Europe’s later adoption of spices and complex techniques.

'At Kōzo, the product is local, and the flavour is African, but the techniques and inspiration come from across Asia,' he explained. 'We use ingredients from the African continent and ideas from the whole of Asia, not just one region.'

This Afro-Asian approach, Somboon believes, resonates globally because of shared histories and influences across continents. Menu decisions, he added, begin with availability and the stories behind each ingredient and farmer.

One dish that captures this philosophy is Kōzo’s reimagined chapati. Somboon traced its roots across cultures, from flatbreads found worldwide to a chapati inspired by Indian naan, brought to East Africa via Kenya, and later popularised in Uganda as the famous Rolex. At Kōzo, the team transforms it into a suya chapati taco, blending Asian inspiration with local African ingredients.

'It’s the food I would cook to feel at home as an Asian person living in Africa, using African ingredients,' he said. 'Every dish has a story, and after tasting it, guests create their own story and share it with others.'

Beyond the food, the restaurant’s Afro-chic ambience completes the experience. With stylish indoor seating, intimate outdoor corners, water features, and views of Kigali’s skyline, Kōzo Kigali has become a popular spot for sundowner cocktails, celebrations, and relaxed evenings.

In addition to this role, Brig Gen Gasana will also serve as an adviser to the Minister of Defence and Chief of Defence Staff on air force matters.

The appointments were announced on the night of January 24. In the same announcement, Col Dan Gatsinzi was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force in charge of operations.

Brig Gen Godfrey Gasana, who has been appointed Presidential Pilot, is an experienced aviator.

This is a rare and specialized appointment, and in recent times it is the first instance in which the role of Presidential Pilot has been publicly announced.

In 2023, Brig Gen Gasana, then holding the rank of Colonel, was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. At the time, he was serving as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Rwanda Air Force.

Col Dan Gatsinzi, meanwhile, was promoted to the rank of Colonel in September 2024 from Lieutenant Colonel.

In 2025, he emerged as the best-performing graduate among officers who completed their studies at the Senior Command and Staff College in Nyakinama.

In 2021, Col Gatsinzi served as Chief of Operations in the Rwanda Air Force.

Brig Gen Godfrey Gasana, who has been appointed Presidential Pilot, is an experienced aviator.

In 2025, Col Dan Gatsinzi emerged the best-performing graduate among officers who completed their studies at the Senior Command and Staff College in Nyakinama.

On the social platform X, the WHO chief noted that the move will make the United States itself and the world “less safe.”

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Jan. 20, 2025, the first day of his second term to formally initiate the U.S. exit from the UN specialized agency. The United Nations received the formal notice two days later.

Under the UN charter, the withdrawal takes effect one year after notice is given.

Commending the contribution made by the United States as a founding member to many of WHO’s greatest achievements, Tedros wrote in the X post, “Unfortunately, the reasons cited for the U.S. decision to withdraw from WHO are untrue.”

The U.S. move “makes both the U.S. and the world less safe,” he said, expressing hope that the United States “will return to active participation in WHO in the future.”

Also on Saturday, the WHO issued a statement, voicing regret over the U.S. withdrawal and rejecting accusations made by the Trump administration.

The U.S. withdrawal raises issues that will be considered by the WHO Executive Board at its regular meeting starting on Feb. 2 and by the World Health Assembly at its annual meeting in May 2026, it said.

In dealing with the consequences, the WHO Secretariat “will act on advice and guidance of our governing bodies accordingly,” a WHO press official told Xinhua in an email Wednesday.

The United States has yet to pay its outstanding membership dues, according to the official. “As of today, the USA has not paid the invoiced amounts for its assessed contributions for the biennium 2024-2025,” the official said.

The U.S.-based National Public Radio (NPR) reported that the outstanding amount is estimated to total some 278 million U.S. dollars.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Saturday depicted as “untrue” the reasons given by the United States for its withdrawal from the global health watchdog.

The new cabinet, dubbed “Mambe II,” comprises 35 members, including the prime minister, a newly created deputy prime minister, several ministers of state, ministers, and ministers delegate.

In a significant structural shift, the government now includes the post of Deputy Prime Minister. This strategic position is held by Tene Birahima Ouattara, the brother of President Ouattara, who also retains his critical portfolio as Minister of Defense.

The new lineup places several women in high-profile roles. Notably, Anne Desiree Ouloto as minister of public service and Niale Kaba as minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation.

While the core of the previous administration remains, several former ministers were retained with adjusted portfolios.

The reshuffle also introduces technocratic expertise into the cabinet. Among the newly appointed figures are Yacouba Hien Sie, previously the head of the Abidjan Port Authority, and Jean-Louis Moulot, known for his work in airport development. Other new entrants include Djibril Ouattara, Abou Bamba, and Bernard Kini Comoe.

Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara has reappointed Robert Beugre Mambe as prime minister, resetting his government after December’s legislative elections reshaped parliament.

Hussein made the remarks during a phone call with European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, according to a statement by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

The two officials discussed the developments in Syria, particularly the recent escape of IS members from prisons previously controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the statement read.

They underlined the necessity of sustaining the ceasefire in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province and resolving conflicts through peaceful means. Both sides further highlighted the importance of an active European role in supporting talks between the SDF and the Syrian interim government to reach binding agreements.

Hussein also reviewed the results of his recent visit to Iran, and the two sides exchanged views on EU relations in light of the “tense and dangerous” regional situation, it said.

For her part, Kallas expressed her gratitude to the Iraqi government for its initial agreement to receive the IS detainees from Syria, the statement said.

The discussion follows Iraq’s recent reception of the first 150 IS detainees transferred from Syria. U.S. Central Command said the detainees were moved from a detention facility in Hasakah to a secure location in Iraq. The transfer is part of a broader plan that could eventually see up to 7,000 IS detainees relocated to Iraqi-controlled facilities.

On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani urged countries around the world, particularly EU members, to repatriate their nationals detained for links to the IS, during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said Saturday that Iraq should not solely bear the security and financial burdens of Islamic State (IS) detainees, and the responsibility for addressing the issue rests with all relevant countries.

At the ceremony on Thursday night, Ndayizigiye Jean Marie Vianney, permanent secretary in Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, praised Chinese medical teams for their services. “Whether in hospitals, clinics, or communities, your work embodies resilience, excellence, and selflessness. Your service does not go unnoticed,” he said.

He said that their contribution represents the strong and growing partnership between Rwanda and China, particularly in the health sector, adding that this collaboration has brought skills and knowledge exchange, as well as a lasting impact, “strengthening our shared vision of healthier and more resilient communities.”

Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda Gao Wenqi said the medical teams stand as a powerful testament to the deep bonds between the two peoples, noting that this year, more doctors and nurses have arrived in Rwanda, elevating the bilateral health cooperation to new heights.

Wang Yongxiang, head of the 25th Chinese medical team in Rwanda, said that team members have worked side by side with Rwandan colleagues in clinics, operating rooms, and wards.

Over the past year, the Chinese medical teams have helped build an orthopedic specialty system and a standardized pain management clinic at Kibungo Hospital, and have transferred techniques such as traditional Chinese acupuncture, painless labor, and infection control to local doctors, bringing sustainable benefits to both the local healthcare system and the Rwandan people, Wang said.

Li Junsheng, a member of the 25th Chinese medical team in Rwanda, has participated in several batches and received a special award from the Ministry of Health in grateful recognition of his “11 years of dedicated service to the people of Rwanda.”

According to Han Hongyang, head of the newly arrived 26th Chinese medical team, the team consists of 19 members covering eight clinical departments like surgery, orthopedics, anaesthesia, obstetrics and gynaecology, nursing, and traditional Chinese medicine.

Since 1982, China has dispatched 26 medical teams to Rwanda, providing daily medical services at Masaka Hospital and Kibungo Hospital.

Speaking during an interview in Davos, Switzerland, Trump suggested that the United States had 'never really needed' its NATO allies and claimed that troops from other NATO countries 'stayed a little back' from frontline combat in Afghanistan. The comments came amid ongoing tensions regarding NATO cooperation and Trump’s controversial statements about the alliance’s future role.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reacted sharply to Trump’s remarks, calling them 'insulting' and 'appalling.' Starmer emphasized that the sacrifices made by British and other NATO forces deserve respect and recognition. He stated that such comments are deeply hurtful to the families of service members who died or were wounded during the nearly 20‑year conflict.

Starmer expressed sympathy for those affected by the war and highlighted the shared history of cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States. While he did not explicitly demand an official apology, his strong language suggested that such a step would be appropriate in light of the backlash.

The reaction was not limited to political leaders. Veterans of the Afghanistan campaign, as well as public figures like Prince Harry who served in Afghanistan spoke out against Trump’s characterization of NATO forces. Critics pointed out that NATO’s collective defence clause, Article 5, was invoked for the first time after the September 11, 2001 attacks, and allies responded alongside the U.S. to support operations in the region.

Many noted the actual human cost of the conflict: thousands of allied military personnel served in Afghanistan, with significant casualties and lasting impacts on families and communities across NATO countries.

In reaction to the criticism, a White House spokesperson defended the president’s comments by stating that the United States has made substantial contributions to NATO and that his focus remains on encouraging allies to increase their defence responsibilities. However, this response did little to ease tensions with European partners.

Trump’s remarks have reignited debates about the future of NATO and the strength of trans‑Atlantic alliances. With differing views on security commitments and shared defence responsibilities, the incident highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining strong cooperation among member states.

In recent weeks, reports have pointed to a growing rift between President Ndayishimiye and the CNDD-FDD Secretary-General, Révérien Ndikuriyo, stemming from disagreements over who should be nominated as the party’s candidate in the 2027 presidential election.

A faction of CNDD-FDD members calling themselves 'Bene Samurarwa' has emerged in support of Ndayishimiye. On December 6, 2025, the group held a meeting in the former Cankuzo Province, where they resolved to endorse him as the party’s presidential candidate.

The meeting was attended by Minister Marie-Chantal Nijimbere, CNDD-FDD Deputy Secretary-General Cyriaque Nshimirimana, members of parliament from the Buhumuza Province, senior military officers, and business leaders.

However, Révérien Ndikuriyo, Senate President Gervais Ndirakobuca, and National Assembly Speaker Gélase Daniel Ndabirabe were notably absent. They are reportedly opposed to Ndayishimiye representing the CNDD-FDD in the upcoming presidential election.

Political analysts in Burundi argue that when Ndikuriyo resigned from his position as senator in early December 2025, it was a strategic move aimed at giving himself more time to prepare for his political future within the CNDD-FDD.

Sources indicate that Ndikuriyo has been actively campaigning within the party to consolidate support among its members, particularly influential figures with significant sway.

Among the arguments used by critics of Ndayishimiye’s leadership are the country’s continued economic decline since 2022 and his decision to deploy Burundian troops to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where they have suffered setbacks against AFC/M23 forces.

During the launch of the book 'Une Nation en Marche' at Club du Lac Tanganyika Hotel on January 14, 2026, President Ndayishimiye suggested that some people around him deliberately refuse to advise him properly, hoping that he would fail so they could replace him.

'Some refuse to advise me, thinking that if I fail, they will take my place. But if I fail, the whole country fails,' he said.

President Ndayishimiye is also reported to be attempting to sideline Ndikuriyo, whom he reportedly views as a serious threat capable of challenging him during the party’s internal selection process.

On January 25, CNDD-FDD members are set to convene for a General Assembly meeting expected to reshuffle some party leaders and national security officials. The meeting could also approve the party’s candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

President Ndayishimiye is also reported to be attempting to sideline Ndikuriyo, whom he reportedly views as a serious threat capable of challenging him during the party’s internal selection process.

The leadership of Burundi’s ruling party, the CNDD-FDD, could undergo changes on January 25, 2025, as tensions continue to rise between the party’s leadership and President Évariste Ndayishimiye.

We will also remember Mr. Li Junsheng, who has served in Rwanda for 11 years. This year, more doctors and nurses have arrived, elevating China-Rwanda health cooperation to new heights.

As H.E. President Paul Kagame said, 'Our firm intention is to deepen our relationship even further in the next half-century of cooperation'. These words resonate deeply as we celebrate the 55th anniversary of our diplomatic ties.

The Spring Festival is a cherished time for Chinese families to come together, reflect on the past, and welcome the future. We are therefore truly honored to share this special occasion with our Rwandan brothers and sisters.

Both China and Rwanda belong to the Global South. Shared historical experiences have made us like-minded partners in the pursuit of self-determination, freedom, and equality.

Rwanda’s Liberation Trail and China’s Long March reveal common spiritual qualities in our peoples: a sense of mission, courage, and unity. These parallel journeys—rising from the ashes—inspire us to strive for success and dignity. Our shared pursuit of modernization enables us to learn from, share with, and support one another.

The new year presents an opportunity for cultural exchange. Both the Spring Festival and Intore are inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Though separated by vast distance, our civilizations recognize, appreciate, and enrich each other.

We regularly exchange ideas and experiences on governance, exploring ways to realize our people-centered development goals. Together, we work to preserve the cultural heritage that defines us as Chinese and Rwandans.

This year marks the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchange. In his congratulatory letter for the launch ceremony, H.E. President Xi Jinping stated, ' The two great civilizations of China and Africa have been enriching each other for thousands of years, serving as the historical and intellectual source of China-Africa friendship'. It is our shared mission to enhance mutual understanding, strengthen people-to-people ties, and lay a solid foundation for the friendship between China and Rwanda.

This friendship would not be possible without the strong support of Chinese compatriots in Rwanda. They remain committed to the reunification of the motherland and resolutely uphold the one-China principle. By actively integrating into Rwandan society, complying with local laws and regulations, and contributing significantly to bilateral relations, they help bring our two countries closer. Guided by the principle of 'diplomacy for the people', the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda will spare no effort to provide them with the finest possible service.

In the year of the Horse, I wish China-Rwanda relations surge forward with the vitality of the horse, leading the way in friendship and cooperation. I wish Chinese and Rwandan people filled with energy and achieve every success in our endeavors.
