  • Israeli archaeologists discover 1,600-year-old Samaritan agricultural estate #rwanda #RwOT

The ancient estate, found in Kafr Qasim in central Israel, includes colorful mosaic floors, ritual baths, and an olive oil press.

It was located at an archaeological site where an important Samaritan settlement thrived for about 400 years, from the late Roman period to the end of the Byzantine era.

Historical sources describe the site as the birthplace of Menander, a Samaritan magician and successor to Simon Magus, who was regarded as the father of Gnostic sects and one of Christianity’s earliest converts.

The archaeologists noted that the size and design of the buildings, the rich mosaic floors, and the agricultural facilities all reflect the great wealth of the Samaritan community that inhabited the area.

One building contained a mosaic decorated with a geometric pattern and plant designs. Its central medallion was framed by acanthus leaves and surrounded by images of grapes, dates, watermelons, artichokes, and asparagus.

In the northern part of the estate, the team found an olive press, a warehouse, and a purification bath. According to the team, the bath’s location near the press suggests olive oil was produced in ritual purity. The press was carefully designed with screw presses and a crushing basin.

Over time, the estate changed, with luxurious buildings giving way to agricultural production. Some mosaic floors were damaged, and architectural elements were reused in new walls.

Despite the turmoil of the Samaritan revolts against Byzantine rulers, the estate continued to function and even preserved its Samaritan identity, as shown by oil lamps uncovered in the excavation, the team said.

Israeli archaeologists have uncovered an agricultural estate about 1,600 years old, the Israel Antiquities Authority said in a statement on Tuesday.

  • Rwanda’s businesses urged to seize opportunities at UCI World Championships #rwanda #RwOT

In an advisory issued on Tuesday, September 2, MINICOM encouraged businesses to view the championship as an opportunity to boost trade and deliver high-quality services to participants, visitors, and cycling fans from around the world.

'Your active participation and preparedness are essential to the success of this world-class event,' the advisory reads in part.

Businesses were advised to stock up goods in advance to avoid disruptions during temporary road closures, and to schedule deliveries during night hours when roads will be open. Truck drivers will also be facilitated during night operations, the ministry added.

The 2025 championship will mark the first time the prestigious global cycling event is held in Africa, positioning Rwanda as a hub for international sporting activities and sports tourism.

To ensure smooth logistics, the government has announced temporary road closures along designated race routes during specific hours. Alternative and detour routes will be clearly marked in coordination with traffic authorities. Fan Zones will also be set up across Kigali, allowing residents and visitors to follow the action up close.

Further measures include the closure of schools across Kigali City during the competition, coordinated by the Ministry of Education, and a shift to remote work for public servants and private institutions where possible. Essential services will continue uninterrupted.

The UCI Road World Championships is one of cycling’s most prestigious annual competitions, bringing together national teams from across the globe under the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). First held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1921, the championship most recently took place in Zürich, Switzerland, in 2024.

Rwanda’s edition is expected to attract a large influx of athletes, delegations, and fans, alongside visitors keen to explore the country’s tourism offerings. Authorities say the event is not only a milestone for sports but also an opportunity for local businesses to showcase Rwanda’s hospitality and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • How Xi pushes for building common home of peace for SCO #rwanda #RwOT

In his speech delivered at the group’s first-ever “SCO Plus” Meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for building a more beautiful home of the SCO, with building “a common home of peace and tranquility” among the five priorities.

The SCO was born more than two decades ago when the acute security challenges of terrorism, separatism and extremism — the “three evil forces” — were posing menacing threats in Central Asia and neighboring areas. Since its founding in 2001, the group has maintained safeguarding regional security as a mainstay of collaboration.

“Security is a prerequisite for national development, and safety is the lifeline to happiness of the people,” Xi said in Astana.

For years, the Chinese leader has championed strengthening security cooperation to provide lines of defense for SCO members. At the SCO Dushanbe Summit in 2014, Xi proposed to negotiate and sign the SCO Convention on Countering Extremism. The convention was signed by member states in Astana in 2017

The Chinese leader has also been a strong advocate of the SCO’s fight against drug trafficking, organized crime and cyber-terrorism, resulting in notable successes.

Take drug trafficking. The group organizes anti-drug operations regularly, and has renewed its Anti-Drug Strategy for five years. In its most recent development, SCO members carried out an anti-drug operation dubbed “Web” earlier this month, with China chairing the coordination headquarters. The operation seized nearly 10 tons of narcotic drugs and identified 1,151 crimes related to illicit narco trafficking.

Apart from the SCO, the Chinese leader also seeks to advance common security in the region through other channels of cooperation, stating that a “vision of harmony and peaceful co-existence underpins China’s neighborhood diplomacy.”

At the 2014 Shanghai Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, Xi proposed a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security. At the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference in 2022, he presented the Global Security Initiative, which Beijing views as a public good that advances global security governance.

“In enhancing security in Central Asia within the framework of the SCO, China undoubtedly plays an important and leading role,” said Azamat Seitov, a scholar of Uzbekistan’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

“Chinese initiatives … contribute to strengthening stability, economic development and reducing security threats in the region,” said Seitov.

In today’s interconnected world, peace remains fragile amid regional tensions and an uncertain security environment. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, or World War II. In May, Xi visited Moscow, where he attended a Red Square parade.

Xi once pointed out that the painful lesson of war should never be forgotten. In 2015, the year that marked the 70th anniversary of the end of the World Anti-Fascist War, Xi noted that “all SCO member states endured the test of blood and fire of World War II and contributed to the final victory with enormous sacrifice” when addressing the SCO Ufa Summit in Russia. In a joint statement issued after the meeting, Xi and other convening leaders made a resolute call for peaceful development and progress of all nations.

“Only with a peaceful environment at our front door can we develop ourselves with ease and comfort,” Xi once commented.

  • Xi says China always a trustworthy partner of UN #rwanda #RwOT

China is willing to deepen cooperation with the UN, support the UN in playing a central role in international affairs, and jointly shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding world peace and promoting development and prosperity, Xi told Guterres, who is here to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit 2025.

Noting that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the 80th founding anniversary of the UN, Xi said history has revealed that multilateralism, solidarity and cooperation are the right answer to global challenges.

Xi called for restoring the UN’s authority and vitality under new circumstances, so that it can serve as the main platform for all countries to coordinate actions and jointly address challenges.

In a world of profound changes unseen in a century, China has provided stability and certainty and will continue to bring new opportunities to the world with its new development, Xi said.

  • Unyielding courage drives China forward #rwanda #RwOT

In 1936, American journalist Edgar Snow took a picture in northwest China: on the dusty Loess Plateau, a young Red Army soldier stood upright, holding a bugle to his lips. That image, symbolizing a rallying call for the nation to unite and fight Japanese aggressors, conveyed to the world a message of unyielding resistance from the East.

Through the arduous and heroic War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression from 1931 to 1945, a great spirit of resistance was formed. The Chinese people demonstrated to the world the patriotism that every citizen has a responsibility for the nation’s future, the national integrity of being ready to die and never yielding, the heroic spirit of not fearing violence and fighting to the end, and the indomitable and tenacious belief in victory.

When American journalist Agnes Smedley asked General Yang Hucheng in the 1930s if China could truly resist Japan’s tanks and bombers, Yang gave an unwavering answer: “They may have more planes and tanks. But we know we must fight. And when the will is firm, the strength follows.”

Over the 14 grueling years, a nation with limited military and economic resources stood its ground and ultimately prevailed.

Since the Opium War in 1840, China had been the constant target of invasions and bullying from foreign powers. Victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression marks Chinese people’s first complete victory in national liberation and a historic turning point for the Chinese nation — from the depths of crisis in modern times to the path of great rejuvenation. Its people are no longer a pile of “loose sand,” but a people of national pride and unity.

The spirit behind the victory is an invaluable asset for the Chinese people. It has inspired and will continue to inspire Chinese people to overcome all difficulties and obstacles in their pursuit of modernization and national rejuvenation.

It is with this spirit that the country established a complete industrial system after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It is with this spirit that China eliminated absolute poverty and lifted nearly 800 million people out of poverty in 40 years since the reform and opening up in the late 1970s. It is with this spirit that China achieved the feat of rapid economic growth and long-term social stability and became the world’s second-largest economy.

China, a country of 1.4 billion people, has no precedent to follow on its path to modernization. When Western observers ask how the Communist Party of China consistently gets things done, the answer is that it is the result of the enduring resolve, unity and perseverance of generations who have embraced self-reliance and sacrifice, and who have had unshakable faith in the power of collective will.

China is in a critical stage of realizing its national rejuvenation, during which internal and external difficulties and challenges remain. It has yet to realize complete national reunification.

Externally, the world is undergoing profound changes with tariff and trade wars disrupting global economic order and unilateral bullying challenging multilateral mechanisms. Certain countries are attempting to contain China’s development.

The greater the external pressure, the more important it is to harness spiritual strength. These challenges and difficulties will inspire the Chinese people to carry forward the unyielding courage, strengthen their conviction and confidence, confront problems head-on and manage their country’s own affairs well.

The victory 80 years ago has since proved a truth time and again: never underestimate China’s potential, resilience and strength.
