The study, led by researchers from City St George's, University of London, suggests that doctors may improve treatment outcomes by switching between different therapies while tumors are still responding, rather than waiting until the disease returns.

The findings, published in the journal Genetics, are based on mathematical models that examine how cancer cells evolve during treatment. Researchers say cancer behaves similarly to other evolving systems, where cells that develop survival advantages can eventually dominate when exposed to pressure from medicines.

Dr. Robert Noble, a researcher from the Department of Mathematics at City St George's, explained that cancer often returns because some cells survive the first round of treatment and develop resistance.

'Although tumors may at first shrink under therapy, in many cases they eventually regrow. These relapses stem from a small number of cancer cells that have gained mutations making the cells resistant to the treatment,' he said.

The researchers compared the current approach, where doctors usually continue treatment until the cancer stops responding, with a new strategy that involves switching treatments while the tumor is weakened.

They described the approach as 'kicking it while it's down,' meaning doctors could attack cancer at a stage when it is already vulnerable before resistant cells become strong enough to cause another relapse.

Using computer simulations, the team found that planned changes between different treatments could be more effective than waiting for resistance to appear. The models showed that a combination of three or more therapies used in a carefully timed sequence could have greater potential, especially when treating larger tumors.

'Our models predict that this new approach will generally outperform the standard of care. A sequence of two treatments, even if optimally timed, is likely to succeed only in relatively small tumors. But we have reason to hope that switching between three or more treatments, following the same principle, could eliminate larger tumors,' Dr. Noble said.

The researchers explained that the strategy is based on evolutionary principles, which have already been used in other areas such as managing antibiotic resistance and improving predictions of seasonal influenza strains.

However, scientists cautioned that the findings are still at an early stage. The study was based on mathematical modelling and computer simulations, meaning the approach must undergo further laboratory studies and clinical trials before it can become part of routine cancer treatment.

Several early-stage clinical trials are already investigating similar ideas in cancers including soft tissue cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Researchers hope that continued studies could lead to treatments that stay ahead of cancer's ability to evolve.

If successful, the approach could help doctors extend the effectiveness of existing cancer medicines, delay disease relapse, and improve outcomes for patients without relying only on the development of new drugs.

The airline's inaugural flight landed at Kigali International Airport on Tuesday, July 21, following a launch ceremony at Muscat International Airport attended by senior officials from SalamAir, Oman Airports, the Civil Aviation Authority of Oman, the Embassy of Rwanda in Oman, and aviation and tourism stakeholders.

SalamAir will operate two weekly flights between Muscat and Kigali, every Monday and Thursday, offering passengers an affordable direct connection and onward access to destinations across the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe.

In a statement, the airline described Kigali as one of East Africa's fastest-growing destinations, noting its thriving tourism industry, expanding business environment and strategic location as a regional gateway.

'The new direct service strengthens connectivity between Oman and Rwanda while creating new opportunities for tourism, trade, investment, and cultural exchange,' SalamAir said.

Rwanda's Ambassador to Oman, CG Dan Munyuza, said the new route marks an important milestone in strengthening relations between the two countries.

'This new route will support the growing movement of travellers, businesses, and goods between our two countries, while creating further opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment,' he said.

Munyuza also noted that should RwandAir decide to launch flights to Oman in the future, it would receive the necessary support to begin operations.

SalamAir Chief Executive Officer Adrian Hamilton-Manns said the Kigali route forms part of the airline's strategy to expand into high-potential markets.

'Rwanda is a dynamic destination with significant opportunities, and we are proud to establish this direct link, which will further strengthen the relationship between our two countries while supporting Oman's tourism ambitions and the objectives of Oman Vision 2040,' he said.

Rwanda's Minister of State for Infrastructure, Col. Claudien Bizimungu, said the new service is expected to increase visitor arrivals from the Middle East, facilitate business travel and reduce travel costs for Rwandans, particularly traders and other travellers who previously relied on multiple connecting flights.

The Muscat-Kigali route is expected to further strengthen the growing partnership between Rwanda and Oman while expanding Rwanda's international air connectivity.

Gates was received at the facility by the Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, and the Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, alongside other senior government officials.

The visit formed part of Gates' trip to Rwanda, during which he has been engaging with government leaders, health workers, innovators, and researchers to better understand the country's development model and explore how technology can further improve people's lives.

During the visit, officials showcased the NHIC as the nerve centre of Rwanda's healthcare system, where health data from across the country is centralized, processed, and analyzed in real time to provide a comprehensive picture of the nation's health.

According to officials, the center has already delivered tangible improvements within its first year of operation by enabling health authorities to 'shift from reactive to proactive decision-making'.

The Ministry of Health said insights generated by the platform have helped reduce patient waiting times across health facilities, improve emergency dispatch and ambulance response, strengthen disease surveillance and containment, and support more targeted allocation of healthcare resources.

Looking ahead, Rwanda plans to expand the center's capabilities toward predictive health intelligence with support from partners, including the Gates Foundation. The next phase will focus on anticipating disease outbreaks, issuing intelligent early-warning alerts, and preventing health threats before they escalate.

By consolidating health data from across the country and applying advanced technologies, the ministry said the NHIC is strengthening Rwanda's ability to provide high-quality, efficient, and responsive healthcare.

The National Health Intelligence Center was officially launched on April 3, 2025, on the sidelines of the Global AI Summit on Africa by Health Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana and Minister of State Dr. Yvan Butera, together with fellow African health ministers and development partners.

Located at the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) headquarters in Kiyovu, the facility brings together medical doctors, data scientists, software developers, and programmers to analyze information collected from communities and health facilities nationwide.

Gates' visit to the NHIC came a day after he met President Paul Kagame to discuss strengthening the Gates Foundation's long-standing partnership with Rwanda. According to the Office of the President, their discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in health, agricultural transformation, artificial intelligence, and digital public infrastructure in line with Rwanda's national development priorities.

Since arriving in Rwanda, Gates has also toured the TKMD syringe manufacturing plant in Rwamagana District, visited Mwulire Health Centre, and met community health workers to gain deeper insight into Rwanda's primary healthcare system.

The Gates Foundation has worked with Rwanda for more than two decades, supporting programmes in healthcare, agriculture, nutrition, and innovation. Earlier this year, Rwanda became the first beneficiary of the Horizon1000 initiative, a $50 million artificial intelligence programme launched by the Gates Foundation in partnership with OpenAI to help African countries use AI to strengthen healthcare delivery.

In a statement, Carney said that the United States has been 'transforming all of its trade relationships, including those covered under CUSMA, over the past 18 months,' and Canada has made a series of detailed and comprehensive proposals to resolve the dispute and modernize the CUSMA.

'We stand ready to intensify those discussions in the coming weeks,' said Carney.

The gathering brought together RPF-Inkotanyi members from all walks of life within the Rwandan community in the UK, including professionals, entrepreneurs, students and some of the pioneers who helped establish the RPF structure in the United Kingdom. It also attracted many young Rwandans who were either born in Rwanda or in the UK and raised in Britain.

Several young participants shared their experiences of growing up in the United Kingdom while maintaining a strong connection with Rwanda. They spoke proudly about their Rwandan identity, cultural heritage and their determination to contribute to the country's future.

RPF UK Chairperson Egide Ruhashya praised the strong turnout and the spirit that characterized the gathering.

'This gathering demonstrated the strength, unity and commitment of Rwandans across the United Kingdom. It was particularly encouraging to see different generations coming together to reflect on our history, celebrate Rwanda's progress and discuss how each of us can contribute to the country's continued development. Our young people have an important responsibility as the leaders of tomorrow,' he said.

Rwanda's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Johnston Busingye, who also attended the event, said Rwanda's transformation has been built on the values of unity, accountability, equal opportunity and a shared commitment to national development.

The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the history of the RPF-Inkotanyi and Rwanda's liberation struggle, paying tribute to the men and women whose sacrifices laid the foundation for unity, peace and national renewal.

Participants also reviewed Rwanda's achievements under the leadership of the RPF-Inkotanyi over the past 32 years, highlighting progress in governance, socio-economic development, national unity and institution building.

Key priorities discussed during the event included strengthening the unity of all Rwandans, promoting equal opportunities, ensuring accountability across institutions, advancing self-reliance and maintaining an ambitious vision for Rwanda's future.

Special attention was given to the role of young people as the country's future leaders. Speakers encouraged young Rwandans in the diaspora to embrace leadership, remain closely connected to their heritage and use their knowledge, skills and experience to contribute to Rwanda's continued development.

The gathering concluded in an atmosphere of enthusiasm, pride and strong unity, with participants proudly wearing RPF-Inkotanyi colours and insignia while reaffirming their commitment to contributing to Rwanda's development from wherever they live, work or study in the United Kingdom.

Africa, with its abundant natural resources, demographic potential and development advantages, will play an increasingly important role in global economic governance, Urama told Xinhua in an interview.

The 2026 African Economic Conference was held from July 10 to 12 in Abidjan under the theme 'Strengthening Africa's Geopolitical Agency and Trade Resilience in a Multipolar World.' Researchers, government officials and representatives of regional and international institutions gathered to discuss how Africa can strengthen its strategic autonomy, enhance trade resilience and better participate in global economic governance.

Urama observed that multipolarity provides more countries with opportunities to participate in global governance. 'More countries are at the table, and we are going to have more inclusive and greater options for countries to decide on partnerships, on trade relations, and on other things.'

Speaking about Africa's role in this process, Urama said the rise of emerging economies is contributing to the multipolarization of the global economic order.

According to Urama, at this conference, the AfDB, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UNDP's Regional Bureau for Africa, and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development called on economists and global policy actors to discuss how Africa should engage to strengthen its own geopolitical agency within this changing global economic order.

He said Africa's abundant land resources give the continent an important voice in shaping the future global economy. With 60 to 65 percent of the world's remaining arable land, Africa will have a significant influence on global food security and sustainability.

He added that Africa's rich natural resources, including about 30 percent of global mineral reserves and vast global renewable energy potential, give the continent strategic importance in the transformation of global industries.

'So this continent has a great voice, a great opportunity to help shape the global economic order,' he said.

Urama also highlighted Africa's demographic advantage as an important driver of future development.

'And then if you think about people, we as human beings, one of four human beings in the world by 2050 will be African,' he said.

He said Africa's large and youthful population will be a key driver of the continent's future development, with its population expected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050 and more than 60 percent of people being young.

'We have a young, growing population in Africa. So whether you are talking about human capital, or you are talking about natural capital … Africa has a great role to play in this new global economic order,' he said.

The appeal judgment, delivered shortly after midnight on July 18, 2026, leaves unchanged the verdict handed down on October 30, 2024, when the court found the former Rwandan doctor guilty on both counts and sentenced him to 27 years in prison.

After losing his initial trial, Dr. Rwamucyo replaced the two lawyers who represented him in 2024, Françoise Marthe and Philippe Meilhac. For the appeal, he assembled a seven-member legal team comprising Daniel Fellous, Raphaël Constant, Salome Cohen, Michèle Siari, Jean-Baptiste Harelimana and Alexandre Sztulman.

Dr. Rwamucyo, a former head of the Centre for University Public Health (CUSP) at the former National University of Rwanda, was prosecuted over his role during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Among the evidence examined by the court was his participation in a meeting held at the university on May 14, 1994, chaired by the then Prime Minister, Jean Kambanda.

Prosecutors argued that the gathering encouraged intellectuals to participate in the genocide and alleged that Dr. Rwamucyo addressed the meeting in support of the killings.

The prosecution also accused him of coordinating the burial of victims in various parts of Butare Prefecture using heavy machinery, including a bulldozer, in what it said was an effort to conceal evidence of the genocide.

According to the prosecution, he played a role in the burial of more than 214,000 victims in Butare with the intention of destroying evidence.

Throughout the proceedings, Dr. Rwamucyo denied the allegations. He told the court that he had never sought to conceal the bodies of genocide victims, arguing that it would have been impossible to hide atrocities that had unfolded over several weeks in full public view.

Following the ruling, lawyers representing the civil parties welcomed the appellate court's decision.

'It is very good news for the civil parties from Rwanda, who have waited 32 years for this decision. They can now begin a new chapter on the path toward reconciliation,' said lawyer Alice Zarka.

Dr. Rwamucyo's daughter expressed disappointment with the outcome, saying she had not expected the appeal to fail and was deeply saddened by the judgment.

During the appeal, the prosecution had sought a 30-year prison sentence, while the defence requested a full acquittal and Dr. Rwamucyo's immediate release.
